The New Zealand Literacy Portal respects, and acts to protect, the privacy of its registered users.
What information do we collect from our users and how do we collect it?
The Portal does not collect personally identifiable information about individuals except when they specifically and knowingly provide it, for example when signing up for My Space or the regular email update.
We do collect anonymous, aggregated data and provide it to the Tertiary Education Commision for the purposes of evaluating the effectiveness of the portal. The Portal may also use this information to improve the content and structure of the site.
The Portal does not provide, sell or lease personally identifiable information to any third parties. However to protect site visitors and the general welfare, the portal will release personal information when necessary in order to comply with the law or regulatory authorities.
What are cookies? How do you use them?
"Cookies" are text files that are used to collect information about visits that helps the portal create an overall profile of how visitors use the site, and how often they come. Cookies cannot be used to collect data from any user's computer - cookies can only be used in conjunction with the site being visited.
Most browsers are initially set to accept cookies. If you prefer, you can set your browser to refuse cookies or to alert you when cookies are being sent. However, it is possible that some areas of the portal such as My Space, will not function properly if you refuse cookies.
Is the information the portal collects about users secure?
The Portal takes every precaution to protect users' information. The information collected is protected from unauthorised access, improper use or disclosure, unauthorised modification, and unlawful destruction or accidental loss.
All people who work on the New Zealand Literacy Portal, who have access to and are associated with the processing of personal information, are obliged to respect the confidentiality of your personal information.
What about my privacy on linked sites?
The main function of the Portal means it contains links to many other sites. The New Zealand Literacy Portal is not responsible for the privacy practices of these other sites. We encourage Portal users to be aware when they leave the Portal site and to read the privacy statements of each and every website that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy policy applies solely to information collected by the Portal.
