Accessibility Features

The New Zealand Literacy Portal has been specifically designed for people with disabilities. It has features that are aimed at people with visual impairment and those who prefer to use the keyboard than a mouse.

To navigate the site without a mouse

This site uses the standard HTML features for site wide navigation using the keyboard. There are some specific short-cut keys defined, that are specific only to this site.

The home page navigation items has an access key assigned to it, which is the first letter of the navigation item. The same applies to the left hand side navigation items on subsequent pages.

To access the item using the access key with the keyboard, press and hold down the ALT key, then type the first letter of the item. Release the ALT key, then press the ENTER key. e.g. To access Literacy, press and hold down the ALT key, then type l (the letter L), release the ALT key, then press ENTER.

If there is more than one item in the navigation, with the same letter, you can access them in their order by re-typing the letter. Once you have reached the item you wish to select, release the ALT key, then press ENTER. e.g. If you wish to access NZ Projects, press and hold down the ALT key, then type n, until the cursor has selected NZ Projects, release the ALT key, then press ENTER.
